The 2019 Whistler Regional: Saturday, November 2

Whistler Trivia 5

Jon Montgomery won the skeleton race at the 2010 Winter Games in Whistler.  After apologizing for his exuberant celebration after the leader had a bad final run, he accepted his gold medal and then ... what? (Answer at the bottom of the page.)

Attendance So Far

1279 tables at the end of Saturday play; up from 2017 by 113½ tables (+9.7%).  Even with nothing happening on Saturday Evening (only two tables for the pairs and one for the Board-A-Match teams), we passed 2017's final total on Saturday Afternoon.

Saturday Open Pairs

Winners: Judy Harris, Leo Glaser

Nearly 66% in the afternoon and a very strong final round put event winners Judy Harris and Leo Glaser atop the list. They led for the first half of the evening session, then dropped to second and regained the lead in the final round, winning by less than half a board.  B winners David Huang and David Hu had the B-strat lead at several points during the final session only to lose it, but their final stint in the lead was a good one, stretching the margin to almost two full boards in the final three rounds.  C winners Andrew Mitchell and Larry Whitlow led at the start of the final session and held on to the under-750 lead simply by staying above average in the tough open field.

Two-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Strat limits (by pair average): A: 3000+ / B: 1500 - 3000 / C: 0 - 1500.

Trivia answer: Montgomery marched through the streets of Whistler alongside a huge crowd of Canadian fans all singing the national anthem and displaying his medal.  Somewhere along the way someone gave him a pitcher of beer and he chugged it!
