“I was a star of the silent film era, and managed to get complete control of my pictures: writing, producing, composing music, acting, editing, and even distributing. Once the silent era ended, I was a bit slow to adapt, wanting to perfect the silent form before rushing into the new medium with sound added. I did so with a great satire of Adolf Hitler and other horrible leaders leading us into war, but once peace was established had to flee from America and make my final films abroad to escape the gossip and political climate there.”
“I always enjoyed arranging music: taking something apart and putting it back together again helped me learn about how it was composed, and what choices the composer made in creating the piece. After the war ended, I became a full-time arranger and then a film score composer. A little jazz and a catchy tune brought me fame first with the TV series Peter Gunn, and later with the main theme from The Pink Panther, among many others.”
“I was a self-taught musician whose career was interrupted by the Second World War, where my musical comedy kept my regiments fighting fit and laughing when they were idle. Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament’s attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll hope to get around 60% of the 2018 attendance, making the target number 571 tables this time — but perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised!

Thursday Open Pairs

Winners: Kim Eng, Eric Sieg

Event winners Kim Eng and Eric Sieg led at the break by a board and a quarter and stayed in front throughout, winning by over two full boards and proving McBruce's Law Of Open Pairs again (two 60% sessions will win, unless someone else does it better). Strat B winners Alexandre Ribeyre and Ken Bibby spent the evening session reeling in the B halftime leaders from a one and a half board deficit, and the final half of the evening session saw the lead seesaw back and forth, until Ribeyre and Bibby ended up ahead by a half a board. The B halftime leaders, D Santilli and K Eiden, finished second in B and won strat C by almost three full boards.

It was 1 vs 2 in the final round in Bracket One, with the Roeder team ahead by 14VPs and needing just 7 more for the clinch. For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment. Dominosa involves a complete set of dominos: one of each possibility from 0-0 to 4-4 or 6-6 or 9-9 or whatever the gridsize is. There is one domino of each double (0-0, 1-1, 2-2, etc.) and only one domino of each pair of different numbers (1-2 and 2-1 are the same single domino). Someone has arranged the dominos into a grid, recorded the numbers but not the boundaries between dominos, and you have to figure out where each of the dominoes goes to recreate the numbers given. Strategy: If the highest number is x, there will be x+2 x's in the grid. Start by looking at each number for places to put the double, then look for places to put the dominoes with two different numbers; anytime there is only one possibility, place that domino. Watch for corners where a domino placed either way makes the same two numbers, those two numbers elsewhere in the grid cannot be connected. Check the instructions to see how to place or remove dominoes, and also how to draw a line between two numbers that cannot be connected. As you progress through, you will divide the grid into regions and some domino positions will be forced, eliminating those number combinations elsewhere. It looks hard, but starting with a smaller easy puzzle and working your way up you’ll be surprised at what can be worked out!
