- “I played and managed the team now known as the Chicago Cubs. As a first baseman, I was the first player to reach 3,000 hits in the major leagues, although the sticklers sometimes argue the point because what was and wasn’t major league in the nineteeth century is uncertain. I helped develop a lot of the inner game of baseball that only the most ardent followers see: signals between defensive players, the system of backing up throws, pitching rotations, special plays like the hit-and-run, and many others.”
- “I was an movie actor who was one of the biggest box-office draws in the 1950s, starring in Sunset Boulevard, Stalag 17, The Bridge on The River Kwai, and Network, where my character’s apartment was a temporary refuge for news anchor Howard Beale after he went bonkers on the air.”
- “I was born in Bremen in Germany and learned to play bass, piano, and tuba in my teens. After the war I began playing bass in several jazz bands, and then became an arranger for a European record company and formed a new band to play what I called “happy music.” In 1965 I made the album Non Stop Dancing, quick instrumental versions of 28 well-known songs in 45 minutes. This was a hit and I was suddenly famous. The formula worked for almost 200 more records over the next forty years, almost 200 million sales!”
- “I was born in Saskatchewan in Canada but became a professional wrestler and played up my family’s Scottish roots, arrving at the ring in a kilt and using bagpipes as my entrance music. Heck, I even learned to play the bagpipes at some point. Eventually I became one of the biggest and baddest heels in the business. When I was signed by what then was known as the WWF, I was given my own interview slot so I could raise hell and insult people. I was slugged by “special guest referee” Muhammed Ali in the ring at Wrestlemania I’s main event before losing to Mr. T and Hulk Hogan!”
- “I was born in Spain and became a ventriloquist. I created many different characters and would effortlessly switch between the voices on stage. I was already quite famous when I became a regular on The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1950s and 60s. I did shows on Broadway, in Las Vegas, movies and television, and worked professionally until I was nearly 100!”

Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament’s attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll hope to get around 60% of the 2018 attendance, making the target number 571 tables this time — but perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised!

Results — Day Five — Friday, April 17
Friday Open Pairs
Winners: Howard Epley, Karen Epley
Little remained to do for halftime leaders Howard and Karen Epley but hold off the pair a bit behind them at the break; the rest were three boards or or back. A few good rounds early on were enough to open up a two board lead on everyone and they cruised to victory by two and a quarter boards. Under-4000 winners Ann Romeo and Paul Evanoff were only a few matchpoints back of the leaders in second place at the interval, and took over the lead after two rounds of the evening session, eventually winning by a half board with a big last round. Strat C under-3000 winners Richard and Linda Kelly came out of nowhere: four and a half boards back of the leaders at the break after a tough afternoon; they reeled the leaders in and overtook them on the last round, winning by only about half a top, and taking third place in Strat B (from tenth at the break!).

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.
Unruly gives you a grid of gray squares which you must color in as black or white (some are given as free hints), while keeping to these rules: 1) No three consecutive cells may be the same color going up-down or left-right (diagonally there may be a run of cells of the same color); 2) Each row and column has the same number of black and white cells; and 3) No two rows and no two columns may have exactly the same sequence of black and white cells. Strategy: Begin by looking for two adjacent cells of the same color and color the cells on either side in the opposite color, to avoid a three-in-a-row. Do the same with white-gray-white, or black-gray-black; the middle cell can be colored in the opposite color to avoid a three-in-a-row. This process will create more opportunities to determine the correct colors of cells, but eventually you will have to consult the other two rules to complete the grid. The District 19 Final in two of the four flights of the Grand National Teams is being held at the Festhalle nearly concurrent with the tournament. On Saturday, the GNT events begin at 10:00 am and the Regional events (Open Pairs, 0-1250 Super Gold Rush Pairs, and two single session side games) begin at 10:30. There are only morning and afternoon sessions, at 10:30 and 3:30. On Sunday, the surviving teams in the GNT begin at 9:00am while the Regional Event, a Bracketed Round Robin Teams, begins at 9:30am.
