Sunday Issaquah Alps Open Swiss Teams
Winners: Nist (A), Gao (B), Cao (C)
The Nist team ran six straight wins and somehow this was only good enough for a 1VP lead heading into the final round! So they did what they needed to do in the final round, all the available VPs to win the event, defeating the second, third, and fourth place teams along the way. Strat X was a back-and-forth affair, bouncing between the Gao team (leaders after odd numbered rounds) and the Huang team (leaders after even numbered rounds), eventually decided by the fact that there were an odd number of rounds (and the win for Gao over Huang in round three). The path to victory in the under-2000 strat for the Cao team was like a suspension bridge walk: Cao scored 18 VP in round one, then lost two and had a close win to be fifth after four rounds; three wins and 46 of the remaining 60 VPs was enough to get them back to the top by 4 VPs.

Sunday Mt. Pilchuck 0-2500 Bracketed Teams

In both six-team brackets, teams played five short matches in the first session and four more in the second, missing one team, and confusing my program, giving me a programming project for next time. So the old-fashioned way of looking at the results shows that in Bracket One all six teams were 2-2 in the afternoon, resulting in little movement on the leaderboard, and co-leaders at the break Cunningham and Ross took the top two spots, Cunningham winning the event by 4VPs despite losing narrowly to Ross in the morning and the afternoon! In Bracket Two, there was a cascade of new leaders each round in the afternoon: Tetzlaff led at the break and defeated their closest rivals upon returning, but then lost to Falls leaving them tied for the lead with two to go. Both won in the penultimate match but lost the finale, and the deciding factor was VPs: Falls had just one more!
Bracketed Swiss Teams scored in Victory Points. Teams played all or most of the teams in their bracket in short matches.

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment. Keen is a Sudoku variant with a little math involved. Like Sudoku, you must fit numbers into the grid (from 1 to the number of cells in a row or column) so that there are no repeats in a row or column. As well, you must ensure that the numbers placed into each block (those groups of cells bounded by heavy lines) match the number and the arithmetic operation at the top left of the block. Subtraction (-) and division (÷) are always two cell blocks and the numbers can be in any order. Addition (+) and Multiplication (×) can be three or four or more cells and some of the products can be surprisingly high! In larger blocks it is permissible to have a number duplicated as long as the duplicates are not in the same row or column. Click on the puzzle you want to try at the right (or the caption below) to go to the page with all the instructions you'll need. These puzzles come from Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection (see below) and there are links there to apps for most devices. The types of puzzles in this collection help you to think logically. They begin with simple clues and often develop into more complicated thought trains. Doing puzzles like these strengthens your logical thinking and this helps when you have to work out what bridge actions must be right or wrong based on evidence seen.

Leavenworth is about two hours drive east of Seattle (most scenic is the drive along Highway 2 from Everett, but I-90 and 97 North from Ellensburg also works. Most who have been will remember the Bavarian theme consistent throughout most buildings in the city center, and there are many restaurants, hotels, and other interesting activities quite near to the Festhalle playing site. Leavenworth was the first post-pandemic Regional in District 19 last spring, and organizers hope more players will visit this fall. If you haven't been to see Leavenworth, the bridge is a great reason to come and have a look at this unique Washington locale!
