2023 Puget Sound Regional, Day Five: Friday, August 25

Alarm Clock Reminder

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the day we switch start times from 9am / 1pm / 7pm, to 10am and 3pm with no evening session. If you play in the knockout that begins today and get to the semifinals, you start tomorrow at 10am, not 1pm. This is one hour less between session start times, so there won't be as much time on Saturday to eat between sessions.

One strategy for this 10/3 Saturday is to book a big restaurant table for about 7pm and hash out the hands from both sessions with friends. But there will also be a reception honoring our new players after the Saturday afternoon session, so you might want to make the dinner reservation a bit later and attend.

Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll hope to get a little more than last year, around 60% of the 2019 attendance, making the target number 771½ tables this time — but perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised!

Friday Open Pairs

Gagnants: Louis-Amaury Beauchet, David Roussel

Un chemin constant vers la victoire, a steady path to victory for event winners Louis-Amaury Beauchet and David Roussel, who led at the halfway point by about two-thirds of a top, and won by almost the same margin, holding the lead throughout the evening session. The winners "proved" McBruce's Theory of Two Session Regional Open Pairs, which holds that two sessions of over 60% will win such events (unless another pair does it better). In the under-3000 strat the winners were Hugh Hendrickson and Tom McKenna, who grabbed the lead with a strong finish in the final half of the evening session. Carl Ostertag and Andrew Mitchell were the under-1500 strat winners by less than a tenth of a top, doing just enough to keep the lead after a superb 64% in the afternoon session.

Brain Workout Section!

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.

Net is yet another grid of cells. Your objective is to rotate the grid squares so that all squares are connected to the centre black square with no loops. Connected pipes and squares will light up in blue as you solve.

Strategy: Work from the outside into the middle, ensuring that all squares are connected and there are no loops or loose ends. Every cell must be part of the correct solution!

These puzzles come from Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection (see below) and there are links there to apps for most devices. The types of puzzles in this collection help you to think logically. They begin with simple clues and often develop into more complicated thought trains. Doing puzzles like these strengthens your logical thinking and this helps when you have to work out what bridge actions must be right or wrong based on evidence seen.
