Live bridge continues its post-pandemic recovery, and we will not be expecting to break pre-pandemic attendance records, but it is useful to compare with the pre-pandemic crowd sizes to see how we are progressing. We'll hope to get a little more than last time, around two-thirds of the Victoria 2019 attendance, making the target number 1288 tables this time — but perhaps we will again be pleasantly surprised!

Saturday Open Pairs

Winners: Joshua Donn, Arti Bhargava

Event winners Joshua Donn and Arti Bhargava led by less than a board after one session and held out at the front of the pack until round six, when they were passed, only to grab back the lead in the final round, by a little more than half a board. Under-3000 winners Dariusz Matus and Michael Desaulniers were nearly, but not quite caught in the second session, giving them a wire-to-wire win, by over two full boards. Under-1250 winners Jo Albinati and Geri O'Hara were second at the half but quickly took the third strat lead in a single round and led after all but the fourth round, winning the third strat by over three-quarters of a top at the end.

Brain Workout Section!

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.

Dominosa involves a complete set of dominos: one of each possibility from 0-0 to 4-4 or 6-6 or 9-9 or whatever the gridsize is. There is one domino of each double (0-0, 1-1, 2-2, etc.) and only one domino of each pair of different numbers (1-2 and 2-1 are the same single domino). Someone has arranged the dominos into a grid, recorded the numbers but not the boundaries between dominos, and you have to figure out where each of the dominoes goes to recreate the numbers given.

Strategy: If the highest number is x, there will be x+2 x's in the grid. Start by looking at each number for places to put the double, then look for places to put the dominoes with two different numbers; anytime there is only one possibility, place that domino. Watch for corners where a domino placed either way makes the same two numbers, those two numbers elsewhere in the grid cannot be connected. Check the instructions to see how to place or remove dominoes, and also how to draw a line between two numbers that cannot be connected. As you progress through, you will divide the grid into regions and some domino positions will be forced, eliminating those number combinations elsewhere. It looks hard, but starting with a smaller easy puzzle and working your way up you'll be surprised at what can be worked out!
