Attendance So Far

289½ tables at the end of Day Six (Saturday), 22.6% of the 2019 total.

Live bridge continues its slow post-pandemic recovery, and we will not be expecting to break pre-pandemic attendance records, but it is useful to compare with the pre-pandemic crowd sizes to see how we are prgressing. We had hoped to get a little more than last year, around 50% of the very strong Whistler 2019 attendance, but this looks like it's not going to happen now. But we thank everyone who came to Ocean Shores and on the Sunday page we have a list of upcoming tournaments for you to look at.

Saturday Open Pairs

Winners: Kim Eng, Eric Sieg

Finally, two-board rounds in the pairs, and the final session of this one had more movement than a major league knuckleball, with pairs coming from way back at the break to contend for the top spots! Event winners Kim Eng and Eric Sieg were third at the break and less than half a board behind, and by the time they passed the halftime leaders there were more pairs ahead to reel in, but by round 10 they had the lead for good, winning by over two-thirds of a top. In the under-3000 strat it was Thomas Land and Robert Getz winning from fourth at the break, not grabbing the lead until round 12 of the final session and hanging on for a win by less than a quarter of a top. The under-1500 strat was another similar story, winners Aaron Mohrman and David Wright were over a board and a half behind at the break and finished almost three boards ahead of everyone in the strat!

Brain Workout Section!

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.

Signpost challenges you to find the path from #1 at the top left to the highest number at the bottom right, following the arrows from number to number: 1 points to 2, 2 points to 3, etc., but the distance between consecutive numbers may be one cell, or many, in the indicated direction.

Strategy: Check the instructions provided with the game for how to use several useful tools to help you solve these without guesswork. You can, for example, mark a sequence of cells that connect together with a letter and connect a number later, or you can right-click on a cell to see which other cells point to it.



These puzzles come from Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection (see below) and there are links there to apps for most devices. Doing these types of puzzles on a regular basis helps you train your brain to think logically, to devise plans and strategies for each different puzzle type, and to distinguish between true and false in a world where facts are increasingly hard to come by. Assembling, choosing, and combining facts to form new insights and information is the basis of thinking logically, and playing better bridge.
