Attendance So Far

240½ tables at the end of Day Five (Friday), 21.8% of the 2019 total.
In 2023 in Leavenworth, there were 327½ tables to this point.

Live bridge continues its slow post-pandemic recovery, and we will not be expecting to break pre-pandemic attendance records, but it is useful to compare with the pre-pandemic crowd sizes to see how we are prgressing. We had hoped to get a little more than last year, around 50% of the very strong Whistler 2019 attendance, but this looks like it's not going to happen now. But we thank everyone who came to Ocean Shores and on the Sunday page we have a list of upcoming tournaments for you to look at.

A Little Bit Of Actual Bridge Content

A few convention card funnies for you:

Our partnership chose to play doubles of 1NT openers as single-suited when strong, and equal or better when weak. Without the space to write this up on the card, I wrote only the first letters of 'versus weak, equal or better, versus strong, one suit' creating the VWEOBVSOS convention!

Sure enough, at some point I doubled an opening 1NT, and partner alerted. RHO grabbed the card and looked at it with a confused expression. "What are they playing?" asked LHO. RHO put the card back down and said "looks like Volkswagen."

Later in the same all day Swiss event, the Director announced the time to return for the second session, and my new RHO wrote the time down on his convention card, happening to hit the spot where you write how high you play negative doubles through. The cards cooperated and soon he made a perhaps-negative double, and I perused the card for a few seconds, then asked partner "what time is it now, please?"

I have read that for a while in the 1950s, Charles Goren would play pairs events with Dorothy Truscott without a filled-in convention card, telling each opposing pair that they would play their system. Luckily they never encountered anyone playing the Goren-Truscott "we play what you play" system! Of course, the best story about the Goren-Truscott partnership was when a star-struck opponent read their names on the convention card and asked Dorothy what it was like to partner the world's greatest player. Truscott's response was simple: "Ask him!"

Perhaps the best write-in convention ever, until it was discovered in plain view in the "other defensive agreements" area of the card and referred to the diplomacy of the directing staff, was the sentence "lead singletons with left hand" on the cards of two elderly players who saw nothing wrong with this idea. Almost as good was one I came across some time ago at a local sectional from a very new partnership, the innovative weak OR strong 2♣ opener, which allowed both strong hands and weak twos in clubs to be bid, by the careful use of the Stop Card before the weak variety!

Ray Miller of Seattle is projected to win the 2024 Kirkwood Trophy. Ray had a lead of over 29 points over two rivals who are not playing in Ocean Shores, and has won 41 more at the tournament thus far. The Daily Bulletin Decision Desk does not believe there are 70 masterpoints to be won on the final two days, and thus they have called the race for Mr. Miller!

Masterpoints for all players are updated nightly here first, with everyone's current red and gold point total listed alphabetically below the leaders, before a shorter leaderboard is added to this page. Knockouts and other events that extend over two days are not added until the entire event is over on the second day.

Friday Open Pairs

Winners: Edith DeShaw, Sharon Irwin

After taking two of every three matchpoints available in the afternoon session, event winners Edith DeShaw and Sharon Irwin drove home to victory without seeing much in the rear-view mirror, winning by over a full board. The stars of the second session were under-3000 winners Steven Hibbs and Kemble Yates, who went from seventh to second overall during the evening session. The under-1500 winners, Nick Atanasov and Jon Udell, led the third strat at the break and throughout the second session, catching the final overall place in the second strat.

Brain Workout Section!

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.

Net is yet another grid of cells. Your objective is to rotate the grid squares so that all squares are connected to the centre black square with no loops. Connected pipes and squares will light up in blue as you solve.

Strategy: Work from the outside into the middle, ensuring that all squares are connected and there are no loops or loose ends. Every cell must be part of the correct solution!



These puzzles come from Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection (see below) and there are links there to apps for most devices. Doing these types of puzzles on a regular basis helps you train your brain to think logically, to devise plans and strategies for each different puzzle type, and to distinguish between true and false in a world where facts are increasingly hard to come by. Assembling, choosing, and combining facts to form new insights and information is the basis of thinking logically, and playing better bridge.
