• “They called me “The Country Gentleman” and “Mister Guitar” and they say my playing style helped create the Nashvlle sound, the country music style that got those who hated country music to listen, but I just loved to play the instrument. Did so sitting up in a chair until I fell asleep holding it, as a kid stricken with asthma. Would have liked to record more music in different styles, but could never convince the record companies to let me do so.”
• “I got my big break as Roseanne Barr’s TV husband. Since then I have appeared in five Coen Brothers films, played Babe Ruth, the unexpected King of England, Fred Flintstone, the acting president of the United States on The West Wing, and hosted Saturday Night Live thirteen times. Not bad for a big dude from Missouri!”
• “My first big supporting role was in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, after which I acted in other films and in TV. My next big break was in TV’s Mission: Impossible, where I played a master of disguise, using various accents and costumes to create a different character in each episode, sometimes multiple characters. More movie work followed until I returned to TV in Space: 1999, a real flop! In Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanours I starred as the successful opthamologist who has his mistress killed to prevent her revealing their affair, then played Bela Lugosi in the biopic Ed Wood.”
• “I was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach #1 on the U.S. charts and earn a Gold Record, and followed that with many more successful recordings in the 1970s and early 1980s. I sang O Canadaat the first Toronto Blue Jays home game, and at their first World Series game fifteen years later. I sang The Maple Leaf Forever at centre ice at the closing ceremony following the last NHL game at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens.”
• “My big break came when two student bands merged to become the Commodores and Motown Records thought we would be a great support act to the Jackson 5. That helped establish us as a popular soul group and we slowly changed from an upbeat funky sound to rely more on the slow ballads I loved to sing. I began writing and producing music for other artists and left the Commodores to go solo in 1982. In 1984 I performed at the closing ceremonies of the L.A. Olympics: All Night Long!”

Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll hope to get a little more than last year, around 60% of the 2019 pre-pandemic attendance, making the target number 1930 tables this time — but perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised!
