We have a full Bridge Schedule starting on Monday, June 15th at 7PM with a Knock Out, Gold Rush Pairs and an Evening Side Pair games. The week is full and ends on Sunday with Fast Pairs, a limited Bracketed Swiss and Top-Flight Swiss team games. Schedule Link

“And Now ... Football”

Most will be aware that there is a major event in the initial stages during the Penticton Regional, one that we dare not name for fear of being attacked by lawyers protecting overpriced branding and rights. We can, however, run a fun, no-prizes contest to predict the results! 24 matches involving all 48 teams are happening between Monday and Saturday, predict the final scores using the form below and we’ll see who wins! You can predict all 24 scores and re-pick later if you wish, or just pick tomorrow’s games each day. The scoring system takes into account whether you picked the winner or a draw correctly and how far off the actual goals total you were. Only your best 16 games count, so you can get in later and still win, but predicting all the games gives you the best chance since you can discard more duds!

The program used to process the data that comes in will timestamp every entry and discard picks that arrive after kickoff, so waiting until the last minute may cost you if there is a sudden internet delay. Leaders will be printed (use a nickname if you wish) in each daily page of the Daily Bulletin, along with the Hideous Hog (In Training)'s predictions.

  • “I am an NFL wide-receiver who has won the Super Bowl twice, once with the team that drafted me (as Super Bowl MVP), and once with the team that plays in the state in which I was born, who signed me as a free agent when I was 32.”

This is the first Regional in District 19 since the pandemic to post a first-night number larger than the 2019 pre-pandemic version!

Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll hope to get a little more than last year, around 60% of the 2019 pre-pandemic attendance, making the target number 1930 tables this time — but perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised!

Monday Evening Side Pairs

Winners: Dariusz Matus, Michael Desaulniers

With 86 pairs in the game, there is a lot of movement especially in the early rounds! Winners Dariusz Matus and Michael Desaulniers were 22nd overall after the first round but righted the ship quickly and were in contention until finally grabbing the lead for good in the penultimate round. They finished less than a half a board ahead of Howard and Karen Epley, who were 63rd after two rounds and passed 61 of the pairs ahead of them in the next eleven rounds!! B winners Paulette Desaulniers and Patrick Noel were leading the event early on, until the late starters turned on their motors! Just a few matchpoints behind were C winners Linda Palm and Robin Adams, who improved throughout the session and were actually second overall with a few rounds to go!

Brain Workout Section!

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment (but there are apps listed on the page linked to below that allow easy tablet or phone play).

Rectangles gives you a grid of cells; divide the grid into rectangles so that every cell is part of a rectangle, and each rectangle contains exactly one numbered cell that is the number of cells in its rectangle. (Don't forget, squares are also rectangles.)

Strategy: The larger numbers usually have a limited set of possible rectangles they can fit in; start with the largest numbers and the smaller ones will become apparent.
