Sunday results and masterpoints

We should have them for you on the Sunday page by about 7pm.

NAP -- are you qualified yet?

The club qualifying period for the North American Pairs ends on August 31.  Clubs may still hold qualifying games unless a session has already had two in August.  Breaking average in a qualifying game or finishing ahead of as many pairs in your strat as you are behind qualifies you to play in the District Final with any other qualified player.  The top three pairs in each strat at the District Final (details in the next item) will be invited (with district subsidies) to play at the National Final in Columbus OH next spring, where the Director-In-Charge (of the NABC, not just the NAP event) will be Matt Koltnow.  So, if you have qualified, please play in the District Final.  If you haven't yet, mention to your club manager that there is still time to run a game.

Brain Warmups

There's something about KenKen that gets you thinking logically.  This puzzle, invented in 2003 by a groundbreaking Japanese math teacher, looks like a Sudoku variant but has so much more in it when you get past the easiest levels.  I seldom do a hard one without finding some new solving method that had never occurred to me before!  You still need to arrange for one of each digit in each row and column, but in addition there are 'cages' of usually 2-5 cells with a constraint such as '16 x', multiply to make 16, which could be 8 and 2, or even 4, 4 and 1 in a 3-cell turning cage with the two 4's non-adjacent.  Here is an easy one, here is one to get you thinking, and here is one you can try when you have an hour or two.  The site has both basic instructions and detailed instructions, and will allow you to solve on a computer, tablet, or phone -- or cheat and reveal the solution.  (It's called Keen on the site rather than KenKen to avoid copyright issues.)

Saturday Open Pairs

Winners: Mark Itabashi, July Ratley

Nearly 70% in the afternoon session put event winnners Mark Itabashi and July Ratley so far ahead that a good but not great second session was enough to win and even increase the margin.  B winners Elaine DeShaw and Bradley Rind had a strong second session, and C-winners John Dunn and Gay Jungemann got to the top of the C strat in the final round.

Two-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Strat limits (by pair average): A: 2000+ / B: 750 - 2000 / C: 0 - 750.
