The 2019 Puget Sound Regional: Friday, August 23

Welcome to Lynnwood!

Attendance So Far

969 tables at the end of Friday play; down from last year by 74½ tables (-7.1%).  A very slight uptick on Friday Evening, which was the first session since Monday Afternoon to have more tables than last year.  Overall the picture is not as bad as it seems: I don't have the figures but Lynnwood attendance as I recall has gone steadily upward over the past ten years, with a bit of a downbump now and then.  We're still on pace for almost 1300 tables and as I wrote yesterday, in a year where there have already been three regionals in District 19 (counting the Canadian Championships, whose accompanying Regional had record-setting attendance in Burnaby), a slight downbump here is not the end of the world.  We're off a few tables in most events from recent years, but nothing too noticeable.

Tom Devine, new Diamond Life Master!

Tom Devine's win with Robert Bjorge in the Wednesday Open Pairs made him a new Diamond Life Master (5,000 masterpoints!).  Congratulations!  (Thanks to Karen Rise for the photo.)

"Ask Tom" returns on Saturday

Another Tom Carmichael question and answer session will be held on Saturday before the evening session, at 6:15 in the plaing area.  Bring your questions!

Brain Warmups

So excited about being able to include these online that I forgot to mention, as I used to in the paper bulletins, what the benefits are.  Bridge is a game of hidden information, and we need logic to make good decisions from the data we receive.  A puzzle can't help you remember auctions and cards played, but it can warm up and fine tune your brain's logical circuitry.  Today's puzzle is called Bridges and it will have you connecting islands with north-south or east-west single or double bridges, without have any cross and making each island's number match the number of bridges leading out of it.  First tackle an easy version here, then try a slightly more difficult one here.  The web page in the link has complete instructions and links to the answer, as well as more interesting puzzles for you to try.

Friday Open Pairs

Winners: Paul Gelb, Paul Burma

Paul Gelb used to work beside me in Lynnwood in the days when I used to preduplicate boards, and seeing his name probably means you should check out his display if you have anyone in your inner circle who would like some shiny new 'bling' for their next birthday present.  The two Pauls entered the evening session fourth overall and just a tiny bit off the pace in strat B.  By round five they had the strat B lead for good, and dipped into second overall only temporarily, winning by a half-board overall and more than a full board in strat B.  C winners John Uchida and Bradley Rind were third overall going into the evening session and managed to follow bad rounds with two or three really good ones to win a very competitive strat C by about two-thirds of a board.

Two-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Strat limits (by pair average): A: 3000+ / B: 1500 - 3000 / C: 0 - 1500.

Friday Gold Rush 0-750 Pairs

Winners: Kathy Brown, Christine Myers

Event winnners Kathy Brown and Christine Myers went off for dinner with a lead of two full boards, but this shrunk to less than a board after the first round.  They got it back together and never lost the lead, winning in the end by just over a full board.  Under-300 winners Ted and Joanne Parker moved up from 3rd/2nd to 2nd/1st after round one of the evening session and stayed in that spot throughout, winning strat '3' by almost a board and a half.  Bob Horn and Tom Conlon took the under-200 strat by a half board after being over a board behind at the break.

Two-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Strat limits (by pair average): 7: 300 - 750 / 3: 200 - 300 / 2: 0 - 200.  No player over 750 was eligible.

Friday Morning Side Game

Winners: Jennifer Beall, Ron Beall

Wow!  The winners, Jennifer and Ron Beall, had only two boards below average, on both they scored 3 matchpoints out of 7.  It would be a shrewd move for the leaders of the Morning Series to offer a lavish breakfast on Saturday Morning to the Bealls, for they need only a little more than average to overtake the series leaders...  We should commisserate with B-winners Christopher Class and Thomas Reis (67.26% was a distant second overall), and C-winners Karen Rise and Karen Madison (65.18% was third), plus three other pairs who broke 60% and were surprised to find themselves so far from the winners.

Single-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Part of the Morning Side Series Side Game Series, session 4 of 5 in the series.  (In a side game series you are free to play as many sessions as you wish, even with different partners.)  Strat limits (by pair average): A: 2000+ / B: 750 - 2000 / C: 0 - 750.
