Friday Masterpoint Leaders and Results

Attendance Update: 1043½ tables thru Friday, and we have added an extra "Table Counts" link in the links bar that displays my colourful attendance spreadsheet, which you can use to track table counts, or even use as a graphic schedule of what types of events are happening when.  Check it out!

Puzzle Time!

In a brazen attempt to get you to scroll down and at least glance at the rest of the page, here is a recent puzzle from the YouTube channel and blog Mind Your Decisions, which we will include an answer to at some random point near the bottom of this page...  It seems at first glance to be not enough information, but it IS solvable:

A, B and C play a series of 1-on-1 basketball games.  In a given game, two of them play against each other while the third person rests.  The loser of the game then goes to rest while the winner continues to play, facing off against the person who just rested.  After they were done, here is how many games each person played:  A played in 8 games, B played in 11 games, C played in 15 games.  The puzzle is: who lost the fourth game?

(Answer somewhere below.  Nope, not gonna tell you where or provide a link.  Scroll!  (Actually, think about it first, then scroll...)

A few things to think about as we get into the weekend:

Friday Open Pairs

Bolan and Rowe ride the McBruce Rule to Victory!

The McBruce Rule says that two sessions of 60% or more in an Open Pairs will win (unless someone else follows the Rule and racks up an even higher total).  Event Winners Kevin Bolan and Laurie Rowe followed the Rule, starting with nearly 64% in the afternoon to lead at the break by a few matchpoints, and continuing with nearly 61% in the evening.  B-winners Gustav Axen and Shelley Burns were second at the break but had the best session score of the event, nearly 65%, to leave the next under-3000 pair more than three full boards behind!  Under-1500 winners Joan Greening and Nobi Morris improved from 23rd/13th/6th in the three strats to 7th/3rd/1st with a 58.43% evening session.

Johnson and Sims win After an Evening Session Chase

The first half ended with under-300 (and under-200) winners Patti Hulvershorn and Eric Swanson posting a 70.56% score, and during the break the 300-750 crowd set their engines to maximum and tried their best to catch the leaders.  Three pairs did, and the second-best pair from the afternoon, Colin Johnson and Brian Sims, won the final lap dash to the chequered flag, winning by nearly a full board!  Hulvershorn and Swanson managed to stay ahead of the under 300 crowd for a two-strat win by about a half a board.

Side Game Series Leaders

Afternoon and Evening Series after five of six sessions; Morning Series after four of five

How Side Game Series Work: There are side pair games in every session from Monday Afternoon thru to Saturday Evening at this tournament.  They are groupwed into three distinct series as follows:

Each series will determine individual winners for gold point awards by summing each player's best two games (even if played with different partners) by percentage.  Two 63% games in the same series will get you a very good score of 126% for that series.  Adding a 65% game will improve your score to 128%!  At the end of the series the top individuals, usually six but depends on attendance in the series as a whole, will win gold point awards!  These awards replace the ones you won in the games themselves, unless your session awards are greater (in which case you will get the gold point awards plus the difference in red points).  We'll list the leaders each day so you can track your progress.

Puzzle Answer

A, B and C play a series of 1-on-1 basketball games.  In a given game, two of them play against each other while the third person rests.  The loser of the game then goes to rest while the winner continues to play, facing off against the person who just rested.  After they were done, here is how many games each person played:  A played in 8 games, B played in 11 games, C played in 15 games.  The puzzle is: who lost the fourth game?

(Credit: Mind Your Decisions, a blog and YouTube channel with interesting math and logic problems.)

Does this seem impossible to you?  Does it feel like figuring out where the missing cards in a bridge hand are located is easier?  Well, you're wrong.  The answer is surprisingly simple:

The first step is to work out how many games were actually played.  Since the three players played a total of 34 games, and it takes two to play in a game, 17 games were played.  Under the conditions determining who plays in each game, even a player who loses every time will play in every second game.  In fact, the minimum number of games a player can possibly play in is eight, and there is only one way to do this in seventeen games: sit out the first game, then lose the second, lose the fourth, lose the sixth, lose the eighth, and so on.  Thus, Player A lost the fourth game!
